9/25, 9/27--Funny Farm

For our class on Wednesday, we learned about the Letter "F" by playing a game called "Feed the Frog". I told them that our Frog King was really hungry but that he only likes to eat things that start with the letter "F". So, I had a basket of pictures of things that start with the letter "F", along with other pictures of things that start with "A-E". They had to look at the picture and decide if it was a word starting with "F". If it was, they got to put it in the frog's bowl.

We learned about the number 5 and talked about how special it is because we each have 5 toes on each foot, 5 fingers on each hand, and we each even have 5 friends in their class. They then each took turns using the pointer finger to count each of their friends.

We read some books about farms, including one at the end named "The Grumpy Morning" that we read at the end for our Character Count about a farmer who slept in and all the animals were hungry and needed tending to. We discussed the farmer's responsibilities and how we each have responsibilities (more like, this is what I tried to do because at that point they weren't interested in listening anymore and they just wanted to play :))

For our lesson/craft they made their own farms. We used graham crackers as the walls and frosting for the glue and the grass. We had animal crackers (frosted ones) to put inside the barns and they "glued" a barn and trees to the outside. While we were making them we sang "Old McDonald Had a Farm" but we substituted each of the kids names for each round (ex. Old McAna had a Farm...) and that person got to pick the animal for that round.

When they were finished with the craft, they helped each other clean up...(how cute is this?!)

We started out the week on Monday with a Field Trip to Mother Nature's Farm. We had a blast picking pumpkins, going through the corn maze, riding the hay ride, and looking at the animals.

I Can Pretend, Letter D, Number 3

Sorry this post is sooo late! Here's a recap of preschool at the Garrett house. We started out by reading a sweet book about children playing pretend together. The children and I talked about what it means to pretend. After that, I read the books, "I Took My Frog to the Library" and "Real Life Frogs". We talked about which book had true facts and which book was pretend.

I had the kids take turns choosing pictures and deciding whether they were real things or people or make believe. The children did pretty well, although they had a difficult time accepting that Super Why and Tinkerbell are make believe!

We discussed the letter D and each kid got to choose three (because that was our number this week) lower and upper case letter D's from all the A's, B's, and C's.

I didn't take pictures of this, but we read the book "Go Away Big Green Monster" and made a monster paper bag puppet for craft time.

During snack time we discussed the number three again. I had the children break their graham crackers into three pieces. I wasn't sure if they would understand and be able to do it, but they did well and only needed a little guidance. We also sorted our fruit snacks into groups of three.

After snack time I had the kids work on playing pretend. They each chose a sticky note that had something or someone that they could pretend to be. Jacob pretended to be a daddy.

Brigham was a puppy.
Logan was a hesitant firefighter.
Andrew was a knight.
Josh was a construction worker.
Ana was a pirate.

After that activity we talked once more about the letter D. I brought out a basket with a bunch of items in them. I had each child pull out an item that started with the letter D (a doggy, Diego, a dress, a diaper, etc.). This didn't work out as well as I'd hoped. They did alright, but I'm not sure that they quite understood this concept and they were very distracted with the dress-ups that I had just taken away from them. If I could do it over again I would've done this activity earlier in the day when they could pay better attention, and I would've definitely saved the dress-ups for last! In the end, I just let them play with the dress-ups and they had a blast (although the swords were taken away pretty quickly)!
