9/10/10: I Have Feelings

Freeplay: Magnets, Puzzles, Mr. Potato Head

Opening: All of the usual :) + looking at words that start with "a" in the Alphabet Center.  We went over how "A" makes an "a a apple" sound, and an "a a acorn" sound.  We sang "If You're Happy and You Know It".  Then we looked at a few pictures and discussed what emotion it was showing, and why we feel that way sometimes.  Then each child had a turn to look in the mirror and make an emotion.
Lesson: We colored the heads and noses to go with our emotions game.  We took a break to do "The Wheels on the Bus", and then the kids played with the faces, putting different noses, eyes, and mouths together. (This is a fun game to play at home.)

Next they searched around downstairs for the number "0".  I had lots of numbers 0-9 posted around, but told them to only take "O"s and tape them onto our "O" poster.
They did great!
Then they did a number search for zero.  They all did super at circling all the zeros on the page. (And some did other numbers too :).)
Snack: Snack was mini cinnamon bagels and apple juice.  We did some subtraction equaling zero.  I put out 2 bagels, then took 2 away.  Zero are left!  We put out 4 bagels, then took 4 away.  Zero are left.  We talked about the shape of zero that looks like our bagels, or donuts, or sometimes cookies.  It is round with a hole in the middle.
Character Counts: After a quick "5 Little Monkeys" (the alligator version) song, we read "The Boy Who Cried Wolf".  We talked about how the little boy didn't tell the truth the first two times, so when the wolves came no one believed him because they didn't trust him anymore.
Closing: Sang "If You Chance to Meet a Frown", practiced making different faces (mad, surprised, excited, sleepy, happy-this one was really cute!), reviewed "A" and "0", and then everyone shared something they're going to do this weekend (ALL of them said camping...even though I know that's not true.  Haha!).

Everyone did so great at doing their jobs today.  I think we all were in more of a routine and more comfortable.  This week couldn't have gone better!  I am so excited!
