Growing Up, Letter C, Number 2

Today in Joy School we had a lot of fun reviewing the letter C and number 2 and growing up. To review the letter C getting bigger we read about Clifford, the Big Red Dog. The kids really seemed to enjoy this. We talked about how he was small, but then he grew bigger and bigger. I had the letters A, B, and C plastered all over my walls and had the kids find the letter C to put on a Clifford drawing we had on the wall. Kind of like pin the tail on the donkey, but pin the letter C on Clifford. They did a good job of distinguishing the letter C from the other letters. Then we went over all the letter sounds. I pointed to a letter and they told me the sound that the letter made.
To carry on our Clifford theme, the kids made pictures of Clifford when he was a puppy and how he grew bigger and bigger. This helped to emphasize our theme of Growing Up. The kids enjoyed coloring and pasting.
Our next activity was making cups with their faces on them and then planting grass so it looks like hair. This was a little bit more difficult for the kids because they aren't quite ready to design their own faces. It was more important that they tried. Some of the kids had me help them draw their faces. Maybe next time, I should just get a real picture of them and have them paste it on the cup. We talked about what it takes to help seeds grow: soil, water, sun. They were all very excited to see their seeds grow--and it was a little hard for them to have to wait a few days for the seeds to sprout and grow. Just a reminder to moms to keep them wet!

For our snack we practiced counting and our numbers. All of the children were given cupcake wrappers with the numbers 0-3 written on them. Then they were to sort that number Gold Fish crackers into the cup. Some of the kids did better at this than others. It was a little hard for some because they just wanted to eat the crackers. That was fine, too. After they sorted they were able to eat the crackers.
We then read a few stories about growing up. We read a story about how tadpoles become frogs, caterpillars become butterflies, and acorns become trees. We talked about how the children will grow up to be like their mommies and daddies. I wish I would have tied in a little bit about how they can grow up to be more like Jesus and Heavenly Father, but that is okay. We read a story about a boy who was growing bigger and bigger. The kids liked that.

For our closing the kids got to practice their numbers and then they played outside in the backyard.

Today went a lot smoother than Monday. I loosened up a bit and just remembered to have fun. I think we all had a great time!
